Phones for Life to create scholarship to memorialize those killed at Virginia Tech University
Phones for Life, the 501(c)3 non-profit, which provides free "9-1-1" emergency cell phones and free cell phones with minutes to domestic violence victims, senior citizens and persons with disabilities across the US, is going to award a scholarship to one or more high school seniors to attend the University of Virginia Tech in the names of the victims of the tragedy of April 16, 2007.
"I believe in the education of our youth and feel that this is the perfect way to memorialize those killed at Virginia Tech", said Dr. Dee L'Archeveque MD, Medical Director of San Bernardino Community Hospital and founder of Phones for Life.
Phones for Life provides lifelines to those in need through cellphone technology and hopes that the scholarships awarded will help provide one or more high school seniors with the lifeline of education. "going to UCLA, I understand how a large college campus can be intimidating and I hope that the scholarships that are awarded help foster a sense of security for kids about attending a large university" said Dr. L'Archeveque.
The 25% of the value of the cellphones that Phones For Life collects over the course of the year to aid domestic violence and senior citizens will be donated to this scholarship and awarded to one or more deserving high school seniors. "The more phones that we are able to collect, the more scholarships that we can give out" said Dr. L'Archeveque. Each scholarship with be for $5,000 and will be in the names of the victims of this terrible tragedy. The scholarships will be awarded based on criteria that will be discussed with University and Phones For Life will start accepting applications through their website starting June 1, 2007.
