March 1999

As Domestic Violence Program Director at Maimonides in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. L’Archeveque’s compassion for her patients and her work in Emergency medicine told her of the urgency of a domestic violence situation. After considerable discussion with Patrick Fey (New Age Works/ Board Member) she knew that the answer was in technology.


May 1999
Attended an auction and purchased cell phones. Although still unsure of the complete application that would bring about ‘Phones for Life’, after investigating Federal guidelines her mission was clear. 1996 FCC ruling to aid in the public safety allows reprogramming of cellular technology to dial emergency assistance without an air-time carrier/contract.

June 1999
Began distributing reprogrammed cell phones to victims and those under the threat of domestic violence at Maimonides in Brooklyn, NY.

June 1, 2000
After accepting the Assistant Director of Emergency Medicine position at North Shore/ LIJ, Forest Hills, NY. Dr. L’Archeveque extended the phone project to the senior population after treating a succession of elderly patients who had fallen at home and could not reach a telephone to contact Emergency Medical Services.

July 2000
Growing popularity of the plan, prompted Dr. L’Archeveque to pursue phone donations.
Corporate sponsorship of Phones for life Nokia, Inc. (provided through The Wireless foundation.)

Dr. L’Archeveque accepts Chairman of Emergency Medicine at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Phones for Life Program moves to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

Phones for life received a mention as one of a handful of small org offering this type of service. Although the article highlighted Phones for life as a local program the returns are:

Balance nationally and internationally
50 Org including Police Departments and Local Law
enforcement that want immediate affiliation.

NCJW- Penisula section sponsors Phones for Life and encourages the Town of Hempstead to help us with a drive involving the Town supervisors.

We link up with Senator Maltese who helps us with a phone drive and public declaration about our program.

Dr. L'Archeveque Is featured in Newsday as a home town hero

December 2002
Phones for life does our first Holiday mailing

We mark the milestone of 20,000 phones

We open our New Jersey office

We open our Virginia office

We receive a grant from New York State- Senator Maltese comes through again

We open our Washington DC office

New Age works helps with space and computers

We receive our 501(3)c status from the IRS

We send out our 2 nd holiday mailing and introduce our web site.

We preservere through the winter months and start on the large backlog of applications again. We are the only organization mentioned in AARP in 2000 stayed open. We are committed to making this work.
June 2004
We partner with RMS to get donation boxes with postage sent to our donors.
November 2004
We launch our functional web site, Dr. Larcheveque doubles efforts and gives up creature comforts to keep Phones For Life alive. ‘It's worth it.
